Sandstone offers natural variation and character, often with an accessible material cost. Porcelain is dense, consistent and easier to maintain. HSH explains the trade-offs instead of pushing one finish into every garden.

Good-looking slabs cannot compensate for weak preparation. Excavation depth, compacted Type 1, a full-contact mortar bed, priming, falls and jointing are treated as part of the finished product, not invisible shortcuts.

The working method

Preparation is part of the finished job

Existing paving and unsuitable material are removed to the depth required for the agreed construction. The formation is assessed, a suitable geotextile membrane is installed where appropriate and the sub-base is built in compacted layers. Slabs are laid on a full-contact sand and cement bed rather than small spots of mortar. Natural stone and porcelain are primed where the product and system require it, then cuts, edges, steps and drainage details are completed before jointing and a final clean-down.

This service suits new seating areas, replacement patios, side paths, routes between doors and sheds, safer garden steps and larger layouts that connect several parts of a garden. Harry can also combine the paving with brick edging, planters, turf, fencing or decking so levels and transitions are planned as one project.

Is sandstone always cheaper than porcelain?

Sandstone often has a lower material cost, but the final quotation also depends on access, excavation, preparation, cuts, edges, steps, drainage and the selected product. HSH separates and explains material and labour costs so you can compare the real project rather than a slab price alone.

Do you lay slabs on a full mortar bed?

Yes. The supplied HSH working method uses a full-contact sharp sand and cement bed, with slurry primer where required, to support the whole slab and create reliable adhesion.

Can you replace an old patio?

Yes. Existing paving can be lifted, the construction beneath it assessed and the new levels prepared properly. Disposal, access and any reusable features are discussed as part of the quotation.

How do you deal with drainage?

Falls and water movement are considered when the patio is set out. The right solution depends on levels, thresholds, soil and where water can safely discharge, so it is assessed for the individual garden.

Can the patio be combined with new lawn or fencing?
